Decayed Tree Removal in MLK Plaza

Sand Live Oak Cluster at MLK Plaza

Update - July 25, 2024

During the removal of the Sand Live Oak trees, the University developed plans to rejuvenate the area. Our focus is on creating a space that will inspire and provide a serene environment for the campus community. This approach ensures that the campus's harmony and aesthetic appeal are maintained while preserving its green spaces. As part of this plan, ten new live oak trees will be planted along the sidewalk where the Sand Live Oaks once stood. These new trees will provide shade and enhance the design aesthetics of MLK Plaza.

On June 11, 2024 one of the trees in a cluster of six Sand Live Oaks located at MLK Plaza fell. A certified arborist from ±«Óãtv’s Department of Land Use and Planning conducted a thorough inspection of the fallen tree and the remaining five trees in the cluster. When the tree fell, it revealed extensive root decay affecting all six trees in the cluster. Severe decay was also found in the trunk of the fallen tree. Options to preserve the remaining trees were explored. However, the extent of the decay posed an unacceptable safety risk to our campus community. Because of this, the entire cluster of trees had to be removed.
