Global Experience Requirement
This requirement is for students who entered the JGHC during Spring 2022 or before. Click here for 'Honors Requirements (Students Entering Summer/Fall 2022 or Later).'
The Judy Genshaft Honors College is committed to making global awareness a critical element in the education of twenty-first century leaders.  To meet this goal, students choose from a variety of meaningful ways to build global knowledge and develop competency in cultural interactions.
To complete the Global Experience Requirement, students must complete two activities from the options below, and have each approved by their advisor:
GLOBAL EXPERIENCE ACTIVITY OPTIONS
Options that count towards ONE completed activity:
- Levels 1 and 2 of a foreign language through coursework or demonstrated proficiency.
- Any Honors or Education Abroad international trip
- Completion of the three-part Judy Genshaft Honors College Re-entry Series —Workshops hosted for students to deeply and critically reflect on the personal and professional impact of their study abroad experience(s).
- Connect with an iBuddy for a semester of intercultural exchange with another ±«Óãtv student.
- Serve as a GloBull Ambassador via Education Abroad for two semesters.
- 45 hours in a globally-focused internship (e.g. State Department, UN, EU, etc.)*
- 45 hours of globally-focused research tracked via the Office of Undergraduate Research (e.g. looking at women's education worldwide). Must be separate from any research performed for a course assignment/grade.*
- 45 hours of globally-focused service, in addition to hours completed towards the Community Service Requirement. *
- Complete one of the following cultural minor or certificate programs: Africana Studies, Classics, Deaf Studies, International Business, International Studies, Latin American Caribbean and Latino Studies, Linguistics, Queer and Sexuality Studies, Religion and Health, Religious Studies, or Women's and Gender Studies.
- Participate in a Grand Challenge competition. Regardless of Grand Challenge theme, projects must be globally focused in nature and selected as finalists to be eligible for Global Experience credit.
- Participate in the
- Conduct globally-focused field work, a pre-professional internship, or pre-professional
clinical*
Present globally-focused research at a conference. Must be separate from any presentations performed for a course assignment/grade* - Complete the 0 credit "Global Experience Workshop" IDH 2930 course
- Complete the JGHC International Teaching Assistant Language Partners program
*Note that "globally-focused" internship/service/research/field work/clinicals must be dominantly focused on learning about specific international people(s)/culture(s). Please check with your JGHC advisor before committing to a specific Global Experience activity.
Options that count towards TWO completed activities:
- Levels 3 and 4 of a foreign language through coursework or demonstrated proficiency.
- A passing TOEFL/IELTS score for international students whose native language is not English.
- Completion of ±«Óãtv’s Global Citizen Award.

The Global Experience requires two separate submissions, even if the two submissions fall under the same activity. For example, if you studied abroad in London and Peru, you would enter information for London and submit it and then subsequently enter information for Peru with a new Global Experience Study Abroad form and submit it.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE
- If you studied a foreign language and would like to count it towards the Global Experience, please provide a screenshot of your DegreeWorks confirming that you have received credit for the course. - If you took the ±«Óãtv Department of World Languages Foreign Language Placement Test, please be sure to include proof of your placement level. Submissions without documentation will not be accepted for the Foreign Language Placement Test option.
- If you are an international student whose native language is not English, you may submit a copy of your passing TEOFL/IELTS score.
- If you are natively fluent in a non-English language, you may have a ±«Óãtv staff/faculty member that is also native in the same language verify your level of proficiency. You may submit a letter written by them that confirms your meeting, conversation, and level of fluency.
STUDY ABROAD
If you participated in a study abroad program, please be sure to include all relevant
information, including courses and semester traveled. You must provide a separate submission for each program you have participated in (if you have completed more than one program).
INTERNATIONAL DAY
If you participated in Honors International Day, please be sure to include your Certificate
of Participation as confirmation. Submissions without documentation will not be accepted.
INTERNSHIP
Internship submissions will be accepted upon completion of the internship. Documentation
from your supervisor on organizational letterhead detailing the dates of your internship,
amount of hours worked, duties performed, how the internship was globally-focused,
etc., would be helpful to include in your submission.
RESEARCH
Research submissions will be accepted upon completion of the project. Documentation
from the research itself (e.g. Office of Undergraduate Research Global Research Prospectus
Approval Form) would be helpful to include in your submission.
MINORS OR CERTIFICATES
If you completed one of the minor or certificate programs listed above, please provide
a screenshot of your DegreeWorks confirming that you have received credit for the
course(s). Submissions for this option will not be approved until all the classes for the minor or certificate are completed.
