Professor Emeritus Richard Gitlin awarded IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal
The 2025 IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal for exceptional contributions to communications and networking sciences, often considered the “Nobel Prize” for communications technology, has been awarded to Distinguished University Professor Emeritus Richard D. Two ±«Óătv faculty members named NAI fellows
Two ±«Óătv faculty members, recognized for their groundbreaking discoveries and innovations in chemical engineering to treat cancer and other challenging diseases and nanomaterials engineering for multifunctional manufacturing applications, are among the 2024 Fellows selected to the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). Election to NAI Fellows is the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors.

±«Óătv faculty Daniel Yeh and Jody Harwood have been awarded the 2024-2025 ±«Óătv Microbiome Research Award for developing sustainable wastewater systems for lunar habitats. Their innovative project combines environmental engineering and microbiology to tackle waste treatment in space, with potential applications for Earth.

Olukemi Akintewe, ±«Óătv Engineering Professor, Recognized as an AIMBE Emerging Leader
Olukemi Akintewe, an Associate Professor of Instruction in Medical Engineering at ±«Óătv, has been named an inaugural AIMBE Emerging Leader. Recognized for her advocacy for women and underrepresented groups in STEM, she leads efforts to improve retention and support systems for these students. Dr. Akintewe will be honored at the AIMBE Annual Event in March 2025 in Washington, D.C., where she looks forward to collaborating with other leaders and mentors.

CSE Student received The Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation Award
CSE Professor Katkoori and his MS student, Raaga Sai Somesula, have received The Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation (OTD) Award for Raaga’s Master’s thesis work on a resource-efficient custom hardware for machine learning models.
The 2024 Transportation Achievement Awards were held on October 29. The transportation community joined together at the ±«Óătv to celebrate excellence in transportation and planning. The CUTR event brought together industry leaders, innovators, and advocates to honor exceptional achievements that drive Florida’s transportation and infrastructure forward. Joe Lopano, CEO of Tampa International Airport (TPA), was inducted into the prestigious Florida Transportation Hall of Fame.

NSF Grant Awarded to Dr. Yavuz of ±«Óătv’s Engineering Computer Science Department for SATUQ Project
Dr. Attila A. Yavuz of ±«Óătv’s Computer Science and Engineering Department has been awarded a $364,117 NSF grant to advance cybersecurity for integrated satellite-terrestrial networks. His SATUQ project focuses on quantum-resistant cryptography and decentralized security to safeguard critical infrastructure and emerging tech like 6G.
