M.ARCH. Program Cost of Attendance

The estimated cost of ±«Óãtv graduate program attendance can be found by visiting ±«Óãtv’S Cost of Attendance web page. Master of Architecture students should also budget for the one-time purchase of a required laptop computer and software ($1,750), required course fees ($300/semester), required materials and supplies ($500/semester), required books ($300/semester), and strongly encouraged studio travel ($1,000/semester).

SACD Awards & Scholarships

The School of Architecture & Community Design provides opportunities for SACD students to earn a variety of merit-based awards and scholarships. Not all of these have monetary value. SACD awards and scholarships are announced through the School of Architecture & Community Design's electronic mailing list, typically during the spring of each year.

With Monetary Value:
  • The AIA/Tampa Bay Award Based on merit, awarded to a student for the most outstanding project in the Advanced Design Studio of the fall semester. Recipient determined by vote of members of AIA Tampa Bay during the SACD fall semester Open House.
  • The Dan Powers Graduate Teaching Assistant Award This annual award, funded by SACD faculty, staff and alumni is provided in recognition of outstanding teaching assistance at the Core Design I and Core Design II levels. The recipient will have understood and supported the studios’ goals and objectives, possessed strong communication skills, valued a diversity of student ideas and opinions, possessed a level of skill in various physical and digital tools for design and presentation, established a good rapport with students, remained accessible beyond established class hours, and demonstrated obvious enthusiasm, joy and passion for the teaching-learning processes. Nominated by Core 1 and Core 2 faculty with final selection by the SACD faculty as a whole.
  • Eduardo Garcia Award Annual award to the outstanding student in the program. Funding for the award made possible by the collective gifts of local practitioners and Tessie Garcia in memory of her husband, Eddie Garcia, a noted Tampa architect. SACD faculty as a whole provide nominations based on consideration of academic performance; design excellence, leadership within the program, and personal commitment to architecture. Recipients must have financial need and possess design and scholastic experience. Nominees are required to install a display of their work for vote by the previous Garcia Award Winners.
  • Floy Damon Award For outstanding academic performance in the area of architectural history and theory. Funding of the award is based on merit. It was created by a gift from Ranon & Partners in memory of Floy Damon, a local architect and former member of the firm. Initial review/nominations by SACD History and Theory faculty with final selection by the SACD faculty as a whole.
  • The H. Dean Rowe, FAIA Scholarship An annual scholarship for academic performance as demonstrated in the Pre-Advanced [i.e. Core] Design Studio Portfolio Review. The award is based upon academic merit and financial need and funded through an endowment established by the Rowe family and collective gifts of local practitioners in memory of H. Dean Rowe, a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and a supporter in establishing the SACD. The selection consists of a review of pre-advanced design portfolios by a committee of professionals and confirmed by the SACD faculty. Students must have a 3.5 overall SACD GPA to be considered.
  • HOK/±«Óãtv Prize Awarded to a student demonstrating outstanding professional potential as demonstrated by meritorious academic performance in the Design Development course. The SACD faculty nominate the best Design Development course projects from the previous year; Representatives of HOK judge the work, and ±«Óãtv SACD faculty confirm final decisions. An HOK representative is invited to present the prize at the spring awards event.
  • Jan Abell FAIA Memorial Scholarship Scholarship for full and part-time graduate students pursuing a Master's degree in Architecture. Requires minimum 3.0 GPA; Leadership and community service activities should be considered when awarding the scholarship. Selection by the SACD faculty.
  • John J. McKenna Prize Competitive prize open to graduates or undergraduates majoring in architecture or community design at ±«Óãtv’s School of Architecture and Community Design. The following traits are taken into consideration: technical proficiency; hard working; humility. Initial review/nominations by SACD faculty who teach technical courses with final selection by the SACD faculty.
  • Milo Smith Scholarship An annual scholarship awarded based on merit and for the purpose of attracting top quality new students and/or supporting continued studies of outstanding students in the program. Funding is made possible by the Good Gulfstream Foundation and was formerly supported by the annual golf tournament. This award has been focused on supporting students continuing from Core 2. Initial review/nominations by SACD Core 1 and Core 2 faculty with final selection by the SACD faculty.
  • PRA Prize An annual prize funded by Plunkett Raysich Architects (PRA) for students in their final two years at SACD. Students will submit their design portfolio and a two-page essay exploring how architects and design professionals can lead communities, institutions, and workplaces toward inclusiveness and equity for everyone. SACD leadership in collaboration with National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) members will review and award a student with the $5,000 PRA Prize and a 2025 paid summer internship with PRA. A call for applicants will be issued by PRA during the spring semester.
  • The SACD Aguilera-Wong Latino Scholarship Celebrates an outstanding student of Latino heritage and is intended to support students as they strive to enter the architecture profession and to pursue a career that will have an impact on the Hispanic/Latino community. The SACD faculty select a student based on academic performance, the student’s positive contribution to the School of Architecture & Community Design and to their classmates. It is made possible by the kind contribution of Ray A. Wong. This scholarship is renewable up to 8 semesters and is based on merit. Selection is by the SACD faculty.
  • The Steven Arrubla-Ruiz Memorial Scholarship Arranged through the kind donation of Steven’s husband, Brandon Shaik. Steven was a 2017 SACD graduate and an extraordinary talent who we lost at a very young age, just a few years out of school. Awarded to full- or part-time graduate students pursuing a major in the School of Architecture & Community Design, in the College of Design, Art & Performance. This scholarship is based on merit with a preference for financial need and should be awarded 1 semester. Preference will be given to a student that has immigrated to the United States, and applicants should submit an essay describing their immigration. Preference will be given to a transfer student. In order to grow the balance of the fund, awards may or may not be made in any given year at the discretion of the dean of the College of Design, Art & Performance or their designee. If the fund reaches the minimum endowment level, it may be converted to an endowment at the discretion of the dean or their designee. Selection is by the SACD faculty.
Without Monetary Value:
  • AARC King Medal & Thesis Award Awarded to a student outstanding in research during the final year. Named in honor of the late Johnathan King, co-founder and first president of the Architectural Research Centers Consortium (ARCC), this award is given to one student per ARCC member school. The selection of the recipient is determined by our esteemed group of visiting external thesis critics and confirmed by the SACD faculty. It acknowledges innovation, integrity, and scholarship in the student’s thesis work. Indeed, the AARC King Student Medal is awarded to the top thesis project of the class and is accompanied by a medal from the ARCC and a book prize from the SACD.
  • The AIA Bronze Medal For a student graduating or entering the final thesis year with overall academic excellence and demonstrated a variety of extracurricular responsibilities. Sponsored by AIA Florida. Selection is by the SACD faculty.
  • The AIA/AAF Henry Adams Medal For the top-ranking (highest grade point average) graduating student from each architecture program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. Sponsored by the AIA. Selection is by the SACD faculty.
  • The Alpha Rho Chi Bronze Medal Awarded annually by the National professional architectural fraternity, Alpha Rho Chi. The medal is awarded to a graduating student who has shown leadership within the student community, performed service for the School and demonstrated potential for significant future professional merit. Selection is by the SACD faculty.
  • SACD Digital Award Awarded annually to the graduating student exhibiting excellence in design through digital technology. The award is portfolio based and juried by a panel of SACD faculty to acknowledge the growing notability of our digital curriculum and its graduates.
  • SACD Distinguished Alumni Award The recipient will be a graduate of the program and will have demonstrated a history of achievement and made significant contributions to the profession, related fields, or society as a whole. Selection is by the SACD faculty.
  • SACD Young Architect Award The recipient will have graduated within the last ten years of receiving the award, in that time frame he or she will have earned professional registration and have developed a substantial level of inquiry and production indicative of a trajectory toward significant contributions to the profession. Selection is by the SACD faculty.
  • SACD Service Award The recipient, who may or not be a graduate of SACD, will have demonstrated a record of distinguished service for the school or the alumni association. Selection is by the SACD faculty.
  • Thesis Awards of Distinction Nominated by visiting critics of final Masters Project presentations with final selection by the SACD faculty. These awards may have monetary value when funding is available.
