36th Annual Scholarship and Alumni Banquet Program
Dr. George P. Cobb began his journey as an environmental chemist with a BS in Chemistry
from the College of Charleston, where he studied sea turtle exposures to chlorinated
pesticides and metals with Dr. Frank Kinard. He was shepherded towards the University
of South Florida by an alumnus, Marion Doig, who is also a CofC faculty member. At
±«Óãtv, Dr. Cobb worked with Dr. Robert S. Braman to earn a PhD in analytical environmental
chemistry with a focus of sampling atmospheric organic chemicals. Dr. Cobb was a charter
member of the Faculty of Environmental Toxicology Department at Clemson, and later
held a similar role at Texas Tech University. He currently serves as Chair of the
Department of Environmental Science at Baylor University.
Dr. Cobb serves as an American Chemical Society Fellow, a Society of Environmental
Toxicology and Chemistry Fellow, and is a member of the Committee on Science. Previously,
Dr. Cobb served as Chair of the American Chemical Society’s Division of Environmental
Chemistry and President of Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, North
America. He now chairs the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Science
Advisory Committee on Chemicals. His most recent work includes monitoring and evaluating
paraben’s chemical transformation in Texas wastewater.
