A team of researchers in the ±«Óătv Department of Surgery has made a key discovery as to why we become more susceptible to heart disease as we age. The human body, especially the heart, is dependent on the mitochondria, the part of the cell responsible for producing energy to maintain organ function. The protein, Sesn2, is located inside the mitochondria and plays a pivotal role in protecting the heart from stress.

The turbulence produces energy cascades, a non-linear transfer of energy between different scales of motion. These are as fundamental to understanding planetary dynamics as the cardiovascular system is to understanding the human body.

A ±«Óătv researcher is partnering with the Florida Holocaust Museum to digitize several artifacts from its exhibit, “Beaches, Benches and Boycotts,” which highlights Tampa Bay’s troubled civil rights history. Online audiences will be able to interact virtually with the objects and learn about the region's racial and social disparities from the 1950s and 1960s.
