Hi! My name is Dan Granke and I’m an Instructor in the school of Theatre and Dance, and the Chair of the Committee on Committees, which serves a vital function here at the university of South Florida. The COC is comprised of sitting senators, generally one from each college. Our two main tasks are to vet members to sit on various university councils, and serve as the first step for the creation and update of council charges.
When someone is nominated or self nominates to serve on a university level committee the COC reviews their CV and determines if they are qualified to serve on the committee. In some cases we have two or more nominations for a vacant post and have to select which candidate will move forward in the process. After us a slate of approved candidates is then voted on by the Faculty Senate Executive committee and then the Full Senate. We follow a similar process for Council Charges.
When a Council Charge needs updating, or a new council is being created, It will come to the COC first for comment and approval before being passed to the FSEC and then the full Senate. For example last year we established a Council on Racial Justice. The need for the Council was discussed in the Full Senate, and then an ad hoc committee was created by the Senate President. They wrote a draft charge which we approved, and then went through the process of the FSEC and the Full Senate, with minor amendments along the way.
If you are interested in some University-level service . All you need to do is fill out a nomination form and send it to us to get the ball rolling.
