Honoring Dr. Joyce Burick Swarzman, the former Director of SCATT

Dr. Joyce Burick Swarzman was known for her passion, excitement and love of teaching.

On Tuesday, Jan. 17 at the age of 75, Dr. Swarzman passed away, but she will always be remembered for her amazing spirit.

As a dynamic leader of the SunCoast Area Teacher Training Honors Program (SCATT) at the ±«Óãtv College of Education for over 15 years, she left an indelible mark on the program and our community. Founded in 1981 with the support of the Florida Legislature, the SCATT Honors Program promoted the training of exceptional teachers to become leaders in the field of education.

Dr. Swarzman personally trained more than 20,000 teachers locally, nationally and internationally. She was known for her friendly smile and did more than train her students; she inspired them on their teaching journey. Dr. Swarzman’s teaching was informed by the knowledge of the developing child—mind, body and spirit. She brought national experts to ±«Óãtv to mentor and guide ±«Óãtv students who wanted to pursue careers in education.

Following her leadership of SCATT, Dr. Swarzman joined the Corbett Preparatory School in 1996. For 24 years, she integrated brain-based teaching methods and the value of professional development for teachers. Most recently in 2021, Dr. Swarzman received the prestigious , which spotlights Florida educators who go above and beyond in their service.

Dr. Swarzman started her education in teaching in Dayton, Ohio, where she received her BA degree from Ohio State University. She continued her education at the Teachers College at Columbia University, completing a MA in Counseling, a M.Ed in Supervision and Curriculum and a doctorate in Teacher Education.

Her outstanding legacy will continue for generations of teachers and students whose lives she touched.

The ±«Óãtv College of Education wants to express our heartfelt condolences to the family of Dr. Swarzman and the many friends and colleagues who will miss her dearly.
