About the Event
Join the Center for Sustainable Democracy as part of the College of Arts & Sciences Democracy & Citizenship Speaker Series for an evening with Dr. Antonia Coello Novello on “Public Service and a Cause Greater than Oneself.” Dr. Novello will share excerpts from her memoir, Duty Calls: Lessons Learned from an Unexpected Life of Service, and discuss the importance of engaging in public service to ensure the health and success of our communities. The event will include a question-and-answer session as well as a book signing.

Attendance at this event fulfills an opportunity for rigorous debate as mandated by the State of Florida Civics Literacy graduation requirement. Some students who transfer from other institutions are able to supplement their transfer coursework to meet graduation requirements by participating. Proof of attendance that includes a photo at the event is necessary to receive the credit. 
About the Speaker

Antonia Coello Novello, M.D., MPH, Dr.PH
Dr. Novello was the first woman and the first Hispanic Surgeon General of the United States. She has a medical degree in pediatrics and a subspecialty in nephrology. She also has a master's and doctorate degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University. She was the New York State Commissioner of Health during 9/11. Her career has included leading major public health campaigns to improve health conditions and access to medical care. Her most recent work was helping the island of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria and the earthquake of 2020. She has advised numerous efforts regarding vaccination campaigns and dealing with mental health and stress during moments of crisis. In 2020, Dr. Novello was recognized as one of USA Today's "100 Women of the Century in Science, Medicine, and Education." She has also received numerous other recognitions, including being elected to the National Academy of Medicine and being a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha.
